These lovely Stained Glass Cookies are from Field Guide to Cookies by Anita Chu. To make the windows, hard candy is pounded to a dusty texture and baked in holes in the cookie dough.

What joy exists in the bite of a good cookie?

Penny-pinching Ideas

Rising food costs require more from us as consumers and cooks. Pinching Pennies was a series of stories by Food Editor Gail Ciampa which asked the question, "How are you coping with higher food costs?" Readers, nutritionists and restaurants shared their tips, recipes and strategies of how to be thrifty and still eat and dine well.

How are you coping with the rising cost of food? That was the question and readers responded with lots of thoughts but one stands out -- cook from scratch. That is the way to stretch a buck according to those writing. Many of those responding were retired folks who wanted to offer some of their experience in matters of budgeting. But those with young families also sent along ideas and plans for living within their means while food and fuel prices continue to rise. Read your ideas.
