Essay on the right age to vote

By Catherine DaSilva

Runner up essay, High School

What age is the right age to vote? With the election coming in November, I thought I should address this concern. Eighteen is the legal age to vote. Many older people think that 18 is too young of an age to vote. Voting is a privilege and should be taken very seriously!

I feel that 18 is the perfect age because you are considered an adult. Along with adulthood, you get more responsibilities. When young people turn 18, women can choose to join the Army; men have to register to join the Army, Navy, etc. If at 18 you are willing to sacrifice your life for your country, shouldn’t you have a say in who runs the country? We, as a people, should be honored to have the privilege to vote. Many countries don’t allow their citizens that privilege.

Being uninformed on issues is sometimes a reason young people don’t vote. There are many ways of learning about the issues. Some ways are by radio, television, newspapers, and the Internet. With so many sources of information, all Americans have the opportunity to form a well-educated opinion.

So be a proud American and cast your vote!
