Weak fuel pump could trigger engine misfiring
Q. Last year on a long trip our 1996 Dodge Ram Van ran fine until about 20 miles from our destination when the engine started missing violently. The car slowed down to about 25 mph and whenever I tried to accelerate, the “check engine” light would flash about eight or nine times, start missing again and slow down. I nursed it to our destination and then took it to a local garage. When I returned home I took it to a service center. They found the crank position sensor intermittently out of range and the air intake sensor out of range which they said “would cause lean running.” When I replaced both of these items, the light went out and the engine ran fine until it got to less than a half-full gas tank. At that point it started to misfire again. I took the van back and was told that the fuel rails were rusted on the inside, which is common with the 5.2 engine. I have not yet done this job, electing instead to keep the gas tank filled over half full. We are planning to take a trip south within the next few months and I would like to get the van running properly again. Maybe you could give me some advice about this condition.

Re-striping fixes problem at Cranston intersection
Q. I work at the Howard Complex in Cranston. Traffic proceeding north on Route 2 (New London Avenue) at the intersection of Howard Avenue wanting to turn right into the state complex is faced with four lane choices: one to turn left and three unmarked lanes north. The far right lane is usually used to turn right, but is not painted with a right-turn arrow, nor does it have a right-turn-only sign. Is there any reason it is not marked? Can this be done? If one car decides to go straight, the entire lane of traffic has to wait.

Tell the dealer to check his service bulletin
Q. Recently I took my 2003 Toyota Camry to the local dealer because the “check engine” light was on for a couple of days. They replaced a sensor at a whopping cost of $550. I was told that if I did not replace this sensor ASAP that my catalytic converter could be damaged. During that visit the service advisor informed me that I also needed to replace the “intermediate steering shaft” at a cost of over $500. My question to you is, how will I know when this part wears out? Will I be able to steer the car? How important is it that I change this part? Currently I do hear a slight noise when making turns. My car has 45,000 miles on it.

Q. In Rhode Island, what street signs (parking, stop, speed, handicapped, etc.) are legal and what are not? How can you tell? In surrounding states these signs are “autographed” (lower right corner) by the enforcing town or department. None or very few in Rhode Island have that. These signs are available for purchase over the Internet and can be placed anywhere. Look at the variety of signs. Who put them up and are they enforceable? How about the stop, one way, speed and handicap signs in parking lots?

Q. Recently in Arctic, West Warwick, Main Street was converted to a two-way road. At the intersection where the pavilion is (across from the DMV), there are two lanes heading outbound from West Warwick Town Hall, one of which is a signed and striped right-turn-only lane. I have waited in traffic queues, waiting for traffic to turn right. As far as I know, it is perfectly legal to turn right on red as long as there is no sign prohibiting it. Would it be possible to put up a sign to reaffirm that at this intersection?
